Advent Children is love

la_belle_laideOpening with exposition narrated by Marlene is beautiful. not overdone, and shown in flashbacks lovely enough to merit the exposition dump. This is what I imagined during the game.
Opening with Reno and mention of Elena, double yay!
Interesting to note that Cloud does not win the first fight against SHM, but Kadaj calls the monsters off him. yay for Cloud being kind of weak at first.
Cloud meeting up with Reno = THE MOST AWESOME THING EVER. Cloud's impatient and snarky side, I love it.
Rufus takes responsibility. Whoa, go Rufus.
HOLY CRAP IS TSENG ALIVE?!!
Music that plays during the Tifa/Loz battle is an interesting and unexpected choice. Love how Loz's cell phone rings with the battle winning theme!
Cloud's fight scene is so cool I got chills, Cloud kicks nine kinds of ass in a five ass town, he kicks truckloads of ass and still has asskicking left over.
Vincent's entrance and his rescue of Cloud is one of the most beautiful things I've seen in movies in a very long time. Jus tnow I'm feeling the Vincent love and can understand the wild fangirling of him.
Geostigma then is basically an auto immune disease, how interesting.

Bahamut is beautiful, and I giggle like a schoolkid when Reno accidentally whacks Rude in the face with his nightstick. Stupid slapstick, to be sure, but, dude. Turks. Turks doing slapstick.
Their fight scene is awesome (it is so great to see Reno especially getting some violent action here) but it is slapstick, the whole fight. Out of place maybe but way too entertaining for my own good. Rewatching. Rude's sunglasses!

The Cloud / Bahamut battle is a thing of beauty, too gorgeous for words. Love how everyone keeps throwing Cloud, who is the beautiful hero he was supposed to be I think, into the jaws of the monster.
Rufus ShinRa, you have a new fan, for now I see your inherent coolness, and I never would have guessed that I would have liked you as a hero, but I do, heavens, I really do.
ELENA! TSENG! For like half a second each but, LOVE!
Ahh, CLoud's split second half smile during the battle between him and Kadaj is worth the time of download. Squee! For rewatching purposes, it's just after Tifa's "he's just honest." And his "winning battle" showboat! Oh, my!

And I thought he'd be too prettified and feminine, but yet he actually looks completely out of his goddamn mind, just as he should.
Cloud, balancing on his sword on the ruins of the ShinRa building, Sephiroth ordering him to kneel and ask for forgiveness, Sephiroth, bringing what's left of the structure down on Cloud, Cloud flipping backwards off his swords and flying!
I love this stupid movie!
So good to see Sephiroth kicking Cloud's ass again! Even better to see Cloud rallying and saying, No more!

Kadaj, who I didn't much like through most of the movie (he just wasn't as cool as he thought he was,) still got me misty when he died, because after all he as just a messed up little spirit kid. I knew of course that he had to die--once that image was released of Cloud carrying him, I knew that it was over for Shorty--but it was kind of nice how he went and pretty sad as well.
Cloud, lifting his face to the rain, so peaceful, and then getting SHOT IN THE BACK, so JARRING, is, uhh, more lovely than it should be. But our Cloud, you shoot him in the back, and you just PISS HIM OFF.
Cloud, waking up in the water like a baptism, then healing Denzel, also like a baptism. Tifa's face when Cloud turns to her, for godsake, kiss her already!
And when Aeris kneels in the church, just like you saw her ghost doing during the game, and then she turns around to say goodbye in her little pink dress and little red coat, before walking off with Zack, her first love (and, I believe, who she saw in Cloud the entire time she knew him,) of course has me bawling like a third grader. (Hoo, boy, let's hope this doesn't start a ship wankfest a la Harry Potter. Aeris chose Zack, also she's dead. So, uhh, yeah.)
Keep watching after the credits, to see Cloud riding merrily along on Fenrir (which is of course his bike, and not the mythical wolf god, although Cloudy Wolf does have a role in this,) and for shots of Aeris in the field and a scrolling "Thank you all fans of Final Fantasy" message.
Thank YOU, Squenix! You're forgiven for making the US wait, because, well, most of us didn't anyway. ;)

skitty_kitty, was that they would turn Cloud into a Pretty Angst Machine and--worst of all--completely ignore his quirky, self deprecating humor. And while AC Cloud wasn't entirely Pretty Angst Machine, I saw none of the Cloud Strife who wore Sexy Underwear to win over Don Corneo and told him, well, what is one of my favorite lines in the game: "Whatever YOU want, Daddy!" I saw none of the Cloud Strife who told Barret, "You look like a bear wearing a marshmallow." Which, lookit, I totally didn't expect to see any of that, because that wasn't the focus of this movie. And that's all right. I've still got FFVII the original to look at and nothing can take that away.
Yes, I loved Advent Children just like I knew I would, though maybe I loved it more than I thought I would. Overall, color me very happy. I will watch this again. And again, and probably again. I'll probably watch it a whole bunch of times. I'll have to show it to my friends. But first I'll read them my hugely long summary of the entire FFVII plot, so they're not lost. Maybe I'll even act part of it out for them so they really get the idea.
