Take my quiz, damn you all!

Seriously, it's a cute quiz (I think so, anyway.) You honestly don't need to know anything about Hula in order to take it. I just spent a few hours making it up even though I've had it in mind for about a year I think, and it's got--you guessed!--nice pictures. And let me know your results. I'm curious. ^_^

Lucky you! Out of five choices, your ideal Kumu Hula is Moon Kauakahi. His steps are rooted in tradition, so you know you are getting The Real Thing when he teaches you. He is a master of the Hawaiian language and culture. Endlessly patient and generous, he has enough time and Aloha for everyone, whether they are his regular students or not. And he is one of the Makaha Sons, the best musical group ever, so you are very honored to dance for him.

How terrific! I love this teacher. So far I think he's the most frequent result. Hmm, not what I expected.

Your ideal Kumu Hula is Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu. Hardcore, mysterious, provocative,
and an upstart, his Hula transcends time and culture. He does not differentiate
between Kahiko and 'auana, and everything he does is interesting. Like the man
himself, his Hula is smart, sexy, evocative, and always looking to the future.
Take this quiz!

(Reads "all possible results," and grins.)

I don't know a thing about Hula (aside from the fact that you obviously not only know it, but respect it), nor about the culture, but given my tastes in music, this seems a good choice. From what I've read in your LJ about him, he has respect for the culture and tradition, but doesn't want either one to stay rooted in the past -- just because past traditions carry such weight doesn't mean that people in the present can't add something worthy to them.

(I can't help wondering how Moon Kauakahi and Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu would get along, though! Just as some people cringe when I tell them that I mix metal and classical, I'd guess Mark makes people nervous too.)

Somehow I knew you'd get him; he's so progressive and daring, and in a way he reminded me of you. And you're right: his belief is that if Hula--or anything--stays stagnant, it will die. Things have to move forward.

Oddly enough, he and Uncle Moon are doing a show together over the summer. But there are other Kumu Hulas who want nothing to do with him and who warn the rest of us about him. ("He's the guy your Kumu warned you about." ;D )

Your ideal Kumu Hula is Sonny Ching. How wonderful! You will learn graceful, gorgeous Hulas from this Merrie Monarch winner. His 'auanas are layered, textured, and filled with emotion. His kahiko Hulas are legendary, and his chanting moves you to a different place in time. You will probably enjoy his subtle humor, too.

Sounds good to me. ^_^
