Bird stuff

How could I forget this? It's all bird stuff. First of all, the nest of five absolutely tiny msytry birds that I got died Tuesday, all within an hour of each other. I'm surprised I managed to keep them for the time I did; I think it was about 26 hours or so. Wednesday morning my flicker, Raphael, was dead in his cage. And then, the worst, on Thursday night my beloved baby robin Mahana gradually became more and more neurological. When I went to bed at 11:30, he was seizuring. I put him in a soft crate so he wouldn't injure himself. It wasn't an actual seizure seizure, but a kind of nystagmus I think. (He started out with just stargazing in the afternoon, and I figured he might get over it.) My puppy woke me up at 1:30 Friday morning, and when I took him outside, Mahana was still seizuring. (Let's just use that term for simplicity; it was more of a nystagmus, but a nasty, roomspin one and he couldn't stand up.
Friday morning I gave him a shot of azium at work, although I knew it wasn't going to work. I had him put to sleep right before I left for home. Then I buried him with a tiger lily I had worn in my hair. I don't often get all emo over birds that die, but Mahana was my favorite of this season. He used to feed the other two baby robins.
Today I got in two more hatchling sparrows; one with busted air sacs who is slightly splay-legged, but I think I can fix the splay by just keeping him tightly nested, and for now I'm ignoring the air sacs because I really don't see any puncture marks, and I have a feeling that antibiotics would eff him up.
Also, I took in another dove on Friday and put him in the aviary with the other two and the catbird. Seems the doves are all almost patched up and ready to go. The catbird, not so much yet.
Today it hit about 84 degrees and the pool was nice and sparkly inviting, but I didn't get a change to jump in because I was doing the birdcage shuffle for like an hour after work. Oh, I also brought home a fledgling grackle (his eyes are even starting to turn,) who is partially paralyzed. I've got him on arnica for now.
Right, so the pool. Then I figured I'd go in tomorrow, but don't you know that huge rain front is supposed to be coming back?
Please, let the summer come again!
I've got to work all day on the 4th. Meh.

Date: 2006-06-29 03:33 am (UTC)Thanks a ton. Honestly I feel all right. Once in a while the loss of a bird will still sting a bit, but on the whole I'm used to it. ^_^
