Happy Solstice, everyone!
Summer Solstice is always a strange day for me. I love summer, and so I love the beginning of summer, the long, hot days and muggy nghts, the fireflies, nightswimming, summer movies, ice cream, baby birds, string lights and lanterns, saltwater, the smell of chlorine and citronella and barbeque fuel, summer dresses and shorts... the whole thing, really.
But Solstice is the longest day. After today, the days get shorter. That depresses me, oddly. It almost makes it feel like summer is over before it starts.
I'm a strange bird. Happy Solstice, though!

Date: 2005-06-22 06:31 am (UTC)But then, I find myself getting sad when the days start getting longer in the winter, too, because for some reason I really enjoy waking up when it's dark.
I'm weird!
Hmmm, I keep forgetting that it's the solstice. It's not any kind of holiday to me. But it does have some astronomical significance to me personally, and I just finished reading a book that talked about ancient cultures' close ties to the stars and their sophisticated knowledge of astronomy. To them, this was probably the MOST important day of the year...well, depending on the specific culture.
One of the things this book talked about was the fact that the Sphinx aligns with the vernal equinox when it was in the constellation Leo, in 10,500 BC, and the Great Pyramid helps to form a reflection of Orion's belt as it appeared in about 2500 BC.
I need to start up my Atlantis research again...
