I can't even begin to tell you how much I can't move.
This is some *serious* Hula. It's all Kahiko, but it goes way beyond that. It's incredible, it's comlpicated and really, really hard. I couldn't even open the door to my room once we were done, and forget about carrying anything. I'm in bed now and my legs are still shaking. O_O
Oh, and in case I didn't mention it, that's just from the basics class.
We learned some really awesome moves that I've seen, but never knew how to do. The whole thing is aiha'a, (bent knees, back straight, butt close to the floor,) and I do mean the *whole* thing. (And I *do* mean aiha'a!)
The way she explained it really made sense to me. After we all did the full, to the floor and back up 'ami, (about six times!) and the to-the-floor figure eight (I have to remember the name for that,) and some other down to the floor and back up stuff, and her haumanu did the on-your-knees, to-the-floor and back up circles, leaning back, ami and all of that, she explained that this was always essential to Hula. Back when Hula was about warlike moves, and the movements you needed to work, stuff like this you had to be able to do because it meant that you could do your share; you could literally and figuratively carry your own weight.
I'm not quite there yet. I can't seem to keep my back straight or my shoulders in a straight line after a while. And some of the steps that are new to me are really throwing me for a loop so far. But aside from the fact that I've popped a rib head out (again!) I'm feeling okay, just shaky.
Tomorrow will be a different story, I'm sure.

Date: 2003-11-15 02:13 am (UTC)but I understand that you're totally owned by these classes, and even though it hurts like hell, you'll be back there tomorrow, and the day after, and the day after. there is nothing like dance, whatever form :)
