The Powwow

Yesterday my wonderful friend Kim and I went to the Shinnecock Powwow like we try to do every year. As always, it was awesome. A great spectacle, such beauty and culture (and admittedly some kitsch,) with yummy frybread and fantastic dancing. The two dancers we liked from last year were there again. OMG, this one guy, he is so beautiful and he so fully knows what he's doing. He gets the Native dances, clearly. He's done his homework and when he throws his wiry self around , or touches the hatchet to the ground during the war dance, all you can think of is that he gets it.
Oh, and also these two guys followed us around. It was really creepy. One of them was good-looking but wore a cowboy hat, and his friend almost looked Native but they both had this aura of something Not Quite Right and they explicitly followed us around, to the point where I caught Cowboy Hat staring directly at me a few times while he was pretending to look at t shirts. Like, his hands were filing through t shirts and his eyes were ridiculously and undeniably on me.
I thought maybe they were like detectives or something and they thought we had stolen something or maybe we looked like suspects for some crime.
Either way they failed at subtlety and, like ninjas, we eventually lost them. At least for a while. When we went back to watching our favorite Dancing Boy dance, there they were again, in the audience, staring openly and blatantly at us.
WTF, it gave me the willies.
Then we left at 4 and went to the store for some ice cream or whatever, then went back to my house and watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang which is one of the most hilarious movies ever.
Also, Kim was telling me about this guy she knew when she was a little girl, and she had often wondered what had become of him; if he had done well in life or whatever, because he was such a huge influence for a brief time, and someone she had never forgotten. We ended up googling him and she found out that he had gone on to do some really terrific things and, oh man it was so poignant and touching.
Well, I have some pics to share, as always!
Forget the cowboy...

Wanted that sticker, didn't have the guts.
I beg your pardon?

It was about candles, but I can never resist taking pictures of stuff like that.
Frybread before...

Me, eating frybread, NOM NOM.

I get excited about my foods, man. /Kirk Lazarus
Frybread after.

That dancer doing the war dance.

More dance pics.

"The view from here is...intoxicating. Like fine champagne-ya!"

OMG, she is so adorable!

That little kid stayed at the front edge of the circle for the entire time, totally mugging for every camera she saw. She was such a little character.
Only a little sunburned this time.

^_^ And that was that!
