I am so majorly bummed out today. My sweet and adorable betta fish, Jason and Marley, died a few hours ago. I thought that he didn't seem right yesterday, because he didn't seem all too excited when I went to feed him. Then this morning when I fed him, he did come up to eat, but his gill on one side looked a little swollen, and the color was definitely off. I looked it up on the internet and it sounded like gill rot, so I was going to ask Rob today for some fish antibiotics, only Rob was on vacation. So I decided to go to Petco tomorrow and as the fish guy there for some ABs, only now it's too late. I wish I knew what the hell happened, though! I was diligent about changing his water every week. I only used spring water after letting it get to room temp, and I always used the water conditioner. The only two things that were different were that the light in the tank kept burning out and I had to replace it twice (maybe it got too dark? I have no idea!) and that I used a different water conditioner because they were out of the original kind. But the new one was also for bettas. I just can't figure out what happened to make him sick. I halfway want to get another betta because I do really like them, but I don't want to go around killing betta fishes every few months. I only had Jason and Marley for three months. They are supposed to live for a few years, I think.

In other news, I lost the three pounds I gained last week, so I'm back down to 145, and yet I feel and look as big as a freaking house. WTF is that about?

I skipped sparring tonight. I ended leaving work late and I realized after I had gotten home that I had intended to force feed the red-tailed hawk that came in in the afternoon. This lady brought him in along with a very loooong (and confusing) story of how she came about him. His foot is all kinds of infected and he's emaciated. Of course, because without his foot working right he can't capture any food. I thawed out a rat for him and he just kind of looked at it forlornly. I think they'll tube feed him tomorrow and all, but I really wanted him to have something tonight. *sigh* I named him Jared. Had you expected anything else?

Earlier I got in another baby robin. This robin came in during another emergency (a 16 year old dog who was seizuring. The owner decided to euthanize him, and she was in hysterics, near to passing out. THis went on for about 20 minutes. It was awful.) Anyway, at first I thought the new robin was just gimpy, but on further inspection I found that the joint of one leg was all swollen, I mean hugely swollen, but not broken. And then I noticed that his beak was soft. This is the same thing I've seen happen in bluejays before, and they always die. No one seems to know what the hell it is, and no one else ever seems to have documented it. I had Rob biopsy a dead bluejay's joint a few years ago, and everything came back negative. It looks to me like some kind of metabolic thing, a huge phosphorous imbalance, maybe, metabolic bone disease. Which amounts to phosphorous poisoning, basically. It semi fits, as maybe some people are using some kind of phosphorous based crap to put on their lawns and the birds are picking it up and feeding it to their babies. It's the only thing I can come up with. /Dr. House

I guess today has had its low points. But it had its high points, too, and that mostly had to do with my friends. I talked to Tricia on the phone for a few minutes today and it was just great to hear her voice. Also, Casse and I spent most of the day cracking ourselves and everyone else the hell up my answering random things or finishing sentences with the phrase "my ass" a la Kung Pow. I know how stupid it sounds--well, is--but sometimes that really gets me through the day. Casse had me in tears at one point when we were talking about X Men three and I remarked that I liked the part where Wolverine had his clothes ripped off. I said, "I'd love to rip his clothes off," and Casse replied, "with my ass." You had to be there.

I saw X Men 3 last night with Kim. It was all right, I guess. The dialogue was a huge wheel of cheese, and lots of stuff was kind of ridiculous, for instance when Magneto can't get all of his people to the prison, so he moves the entire bridge there. Hey Magneto, ever hear of cars? Because they're made of metal, too. But I got that, because it was supposed to be a huge, shocking demonstration of power. And it looked neat. Jean Grey didn't do much else aside from stand around glowering and turning colors. Hugh Jackman did a lot of growling. There were lots of explosions and neat effects. It was kind of fun.

Kim made me this awesome glass necklace in which she painted a kind of Northwest-Native looking thunderbird. It's a kind of reddish orange glass with the painting on the inside, very small and detailed. She is such an incredible artist, and so generous.

Tomorrow? Hula, then Kung Fu. I think I'll run down to Petco and say "WTF?" Then maybe to Blockbuster to rent a movie. Hmm.
