FINAL FANTASY VII!
May. 17th, 2005 02:58 pmSo, first of all, this morning I watched the new trailer for Advent Children and I was pretty enraptured. I'm at the point now where I don't actually care if the movie sucks or not; it's going to be such a treat for me to see all my favorites doing cool things like flying around and fighting and stuff that I'm going to watch the crap out of it and probably cry, too.
Then, just now, I saw this clip, which seems to be a preview of the GODHELPME re-release of FFVII for PS3.
No, really. Go on and watch it and see for yourself.
So, it's the opening sequence that I love so much and over which I've fanpoodled for years. The opening sequence has always been one of my favorite parts of the game, with the green sparks and Aerith looking up from them, (so cleverly repeated at the very end of the game) and then the camera zooming out, backwards through Midgar until you get the full effect of the city and see exactly where Aerith is. And then, interspersed with brief clips of the wheels of a train, zooming back into a different sector of Midgar and...
All during this demo, I'm watchign the time on the streaming video run out and thinking, "please show Cloud getting off the train, don't cut away before that part, please!" And then they do show him getting off the train, and doing his crazed little showboating that he does during the game.
And then, my loves, a closup on his face, Cloud looking just as he should: completely out of his frigging mind.
Now I know there are going to be some cries of "but the original was a masterpiece, why would they ruin it by rereleasing it?!" To that I answer: bite me. I might buy five of that game when it comes out, just out of complete, unhinged love for it. Nothing can take away or ruin the original FFVII. Nothing can change what it was. But to update it with better graphics? Why the hell not?
When I say "I cried when I watched this demo," that's not hyperbole. I was honestly in tears.
Which, maybe isn't so weird. People cry during movies all the time, right? Then let's just say that FFVII is my favorite movie. ;)
(Oh, does this mean that we get to see a beautifully rendered Cloud in full drag? ^_^ )
ETA: Okay, so I'm not done fanpoodling after all. I just want to add that, yes, I think that Advent Children is going to make the mistake (haha, I am far more of a canon whore than Squeenix will ever be! ;D ) of turning Cloud into, as I've said before, a pretty angst machine. That, if I'm not so caught up in actually seeing this movie, finally, I'll have time to miss the Cloud Strife of my icon here. Cloud, in the game, had a very vital and quirky sense of humor and play. He wasn't All Angst All the Time, he was fun and weird, and you had the option of making him wear silky underwear or dating Barret--but only if he didn't tell Barret that he looked like a bear wearing a marshmallow. Cloud was a blast, you know? And I might miss that in AC.
On the other hand, if they do re-release FFVII for PS3, then we can get to see all of this and more, only really, really gorgeous. Dang! What I wouldn't give to see an awesomely rendered Cloud jumping onto Don Corneo's bed and telling him, "whatever YOU want, Daddy!"
Incidentally, here is the original opening scene. You can see that it's almost the same exact thing. Unfortunately, this cuts off right before Cloud jumps off the train, because that's when gameplay begins, and I have never been able to rip gameplay off my discs. (But I have ripped every FMV. ^_^ Off FFVIII, too, so if anyone wants the spectacular ending to that beauty, just ask. ;) ) But here you can see a small FMV of Cloud jumping onto a train from a bridge, and then just compare it to our sparkling new, totally manic looking Cloud Strife fully rendered, with actual hands, you know?
I have to wonder, also, if FFVII had been rendered in this way the first time around, would it have been as much of a surprise when Cloud finally snapped? If we had been able at all to see the actual faces of the characters, might we have had more of a clue what they were going through? I suppose they could have downplayed that aspect of it so's not to spoil the fact that the main character is a dangerous lunatic. But in the re-release (if they actually do it,) there's no need to hide the fact. FFVII has one of the most famous storylines a video game has ever had; just about everyone knows Cloud is a freak.
Well, I guess I'll go watch those new clips again. Should keep me quiet for a while. ;)
Or not. ETA another thing. This is a much better version of the (FAKE! FAKE! THEY TRICKED ME!) E3 FFVII PS3 demo.
