I got my first three of the season this evening. They are three starlings (although everyone at work who called me about them told me they were robins,) and I think I'll call them Sing, Wah and Qiu. I got the call at around four thirty, just as I was in the middle of a huge project that I took on today when I probably should have waited. (More on that later.) Every year I get starlings first (or nearly every year,) and every year when I get the call, someone tells me that they're robins. And every year, I freaking believe them. I don't know why. You'd think I'd know by now. Then I go to pick them up, and I say, "Oh, these are the kind of robins who grow up to be starlings."

They're little and cold and bruised, like most of my first starlies are, and my first starlies usually die. But this year I'm mixing meat in with their food from the first. We'll see if that changes anything.

So this morning I drove my Mom and myself to the chiropractor. Then I dropped her off at home, and went right out to the store, because I had decided finally to buy this cute, small storage type thingie from Target, to replace the huge and bulky entertainment center I've had in my room since forever, with a TV and VCRs that I never use, which are not even plugged in. So the new stuff is actually two pieces, and of course, it's the kind of thing you have to put together with all manner of dowels and cams and screws and wheels and all of this nonsense. Just to make it more difficult for myself, I got the kind that has drawers that slide out on wheels. So from noon till around three-thirty, I was putting these things together.

Then it was time to haul the old stuff out. Okay, so I don't dust. I'm a pretty good hosuekeeper for the most part, but I just don't dust until it's too late. By the time I get to dusting, the dust is so heavy that I get immediate allergy attacks as soon as I start. So, hauling the TV, VRC, and everything in the world out of the entertainment center, the dust was flying. My head got all explodey and I felt like my brain was coming out of my ears. But I managed to get the old entertainment center out (it was pretty heavy, too--go me!) and the new stuff in. And of course, none of the stuff I needed to put in there actually fit.

So, Kung Fu was at 6:15 and I really wanted to get everything done before then, but I hadn't even had dinner yet, so I was rushign around like mad, trying to make things fit that didn't want to fit, just to get it all off the floor (with my sinues throbbing the entire time. Very wet.) That's when I got the call to go pick up the birds.

FOrtunately, Michele was going to her sister's house after work, and had to pass by the same place I could pass by on my way home from Kung Fu. She was late leaving work, and I was late leaving Kung Fu, and the timing was so perfect that we actually pulled into the parking lot of the meeting place at exactly the same time. Neat.

Oh, Kung Fu was good tonight. The first night of two weeks of forms, which is fun and challenging. I felt weirdly strong tonight, too, and full of energy, in spite of the heavy lifting I had done, and in spite of my throbbing allergy sinus sore throat sneezing nonsense.

So now I've got my birdies and I'm sitting down. It's so funny, every year when I get my first birds, I think, "there, I've got them. Now my work is done." But, oh, it's so not. Because I somehow conveniently forget that I have to feed them every hour. And there will be more birds that need to be fed every hour.

And this will go on until well into July, when I won't have so many young ones and I can begin to let them eat on their own for a while. I might also get really young ones, neonates, that will have to be fed every twenty minutes.

Every hour, or every twenty minutes that I'm awake, until the middle of July.

Wait a second. Why, again, do I do this?

Oh, one more thing.
