Hula, Kung Fu, sparring equipment
Feb. 4th, 2006 02:50 pmAnyway, today in Hula we ran Keali'i Reichel's papa-hehi number, which is coming together, finally. And I'm glad we got back on that one. When Melissa was with us, she refused to do it, and used to stand there pulling faces if we decided to go on without her. It's a really awesome number and Keali'i gave permission to perform it, so it would be a shame to let it go to waste. You know what, come to think of it, I think that Melissa still has our Halau money. That's about $200 IIRC. I wonder if we're just going to have to cut our losses. I almost think it's worth it to just let the money go, rather than get back in touch with her and remind her that we exist.
In Kung Fu today, it was just Anthony and Tristan and I, and we did forms. Anthony is blue-belt Chris's older brother. The two could not be more dissimilar, or at least that's what it seems to me, having known Chris for a year (although not closely) and only having met Anthony. They are good people, though, at least that's my reading of them.
When we started forms, I had the godawful, sinking realization that I could not remember the first thing about Small Wheel. Could not, in fact, even remember how it began. Couldn't remember any of the moves that came after the beginning. Could hardly remember where I had left off. Tristan told us to start forms without him, and Anthony said that he had barely begun the first form, and that was two years ago when he took Kung Fu for a month or so. This gave me the excuse not to begin Small Wheel right away; I would teach him the first few moves of the first form. Then when Tristan came back, I pretended for a few minutes that I was just reviewing the first form because it was so long ago. ^_^;; And then when Tristan turned to me and said, "Where were we?" I told him, "Gosh, I don't remember from last month." He said he didn't either, and just then, the very last move he had shown me came to me. I showed it to him and he corrected a few things and told me to keep going while he went back to Anthony. Basically, in my head, I worked backwards from what I had just gotten, and the beginning came to me.
Then the middle of what I had learned was gone. When Tristan came back to me, I pulled the ole' "I can't remember the hand position that comes after this" thing, knowing that Tristan would do the entire move, not just show me the hand movements. And then it came back. ^_^ So I moved ahead a bit after that. Tristan's good in that he makes sure you're doing it right. He nitpicks like no one's business. (He's also completely rotten because of that, too. ;D You just don't get away with any mistakes at all.)
At the end of the class we were standing there waiting to bow out. This is protocol, bowing to the instructor, the shrine, (your Josi--ancestors of your Kung Fu,) and finally a picture of Sifu (which has been taken down for the move.) So we're standing there and it's all quiet until Tristan looks at me and says, "Uhh, I think you're the elder sister today." O_O Right! Me. "Lop-ching!" Gosh! I am Sije again instead of Si-mui.
Afterwards, I discussed my financial arrangement with Sije Erica while she was packing things up for the move. During this, she mentioned that she had all this sparring equipment to pack up, but if I bought mine now (which I can pay for it later, in increments if I want,) she'd have less to pack. And, oddly, she had most of it in my size except for shin-guards and the mouthpiece. (Yuck. I understand that we never actually use those, but I guess it is good to have, and I might as well get the whole set.) Once we move, the academy will be slightly closer to my home, and maybe I can start to make sparring classes regularly. So I went ahead and took my shiny new sparring equipment home. :D Then she lent me a bunch of Sifu's DVDs; he's got tons of really cool Kung Fu movies lying around, including a new Jackie Chan one that I had never even heard of. So now I've got something to watch tonight and tomorrow, and probably Monday, too.
Now, I think I'll clean my bathroom, clean the kitchen and the birds, and then later will take a nice, long bath. Afterwards, will have some Karmel Sutra ice cream* and watch a Kung Fu movies.
Locked post to follow, about cute guys.

*Here's the deal: I've lost weight, probably about ten pounds since I started blackbelt club. I see it and I feel it in my waist. I noticed it on the scale at work, but didn't actually see it until Hula today, when I looked in the mirror. This does not make me skinny or anything. I'm 147; that seems about right for my height. This didn't stop me from having a completely fatass night last night and beating myself up over it. But I'm over it now and I'm going to have some ice cream. So there.
