Here I am, geeking out over FFVII again. I know I do this semi regularly (most notably here in a pointless essay called Reasons Why Cloud Is Awesome, and in this entry about what I loved about FFVII), and, well, it's time to do it again.
Last night, I downloaded (from AC.net) these two new clips from Advent Children, which I'd never seen before. They're not spoilers, but the footage is new. FFVII / AC geeks, if you want them, they are here and here. And they look beautiful.
Every few years, I replay FFVII. The only other game that has that honor is Ocarina of Time. Occasionally I'll noodle around with FFVIII or Windwaker because I liked the story of one and the gameplay of the other, but there really aren't any other games I've had such an affair with aside from OoT and FFVII. I'm replaying VII these days, anytime my goddaughter comes over so that she can watch the game. She says that there are things she understands about it now that she didn't get when she was younger, and she appreciates it in new ways, too. As much as she likes it, her primary thought on VII is, "this game isn't right."
This game wasn't right, in so many ways. Yet this is why I loved it. Here are some small screengrabs that demonstrate the bizarre brand of wrongness that I adored so much in the original game. ETA: Important! If you click these lj cuts and then keep on reading, you might accidentally read the spoilers. I will try to give spoiler warnings in the cut text, just in case.

( He flew down from the sky and skewered the embodiment of what was good and pure, all the while looking like a blocky set of pixels, and we fell in love with him anyway. ) And then some of us surmised that it wasn't really him, after all.
I will probably love Advent Children no matter what, too.
Although, recently, someone saw the entire film at the Venice film festival and wrote up a detailed report, full of spoilers, for (almost) the entire movie. It's very hard for me not to read it. I skimmed it, looking for the ending, because I wanted to know Cloud's fate. The writer leaves off saying something like, "Watch the movie for yourself to see the ending!" however ( cut for major, major spoiler, ) On the other hand, ( again cut for major spoiler, )
I'm sure that within few weeks, this fandom is going to explode again. And I'll probably explode along with it.
