On Friday, bossman decided (all of a sudden, after, what, six years?) that he didn't want cages of wild birds around the animal hospital because it might look messy to any clients passing through on their way to the bathroom. He suggested "maybe we can make a bird station or something," which at first sounded peachy, until he suggested making it in the barn. Uhh, keeping baby birds in a barn when it's 90 degrees in July? And me running out every hour, dodging woodbees to feed the babies? Not. Then he suggested the small, mostly unused room upstairs. Oddly, I had peeked in there a few days before, because I was bored and decided I wanted to look out every window in the hospital, especially the tucked away ones in this house that is over a hundred years old. It's actually perfect, because it has a long shelf/desk with a chair, so I can line up my cages and even sit down to feed birds if I want to. The window is to the West and overlooks part of the hospital and then the woods beyond, and it gets really nice light after two or so.
While I was feeding the birds up there, Casse came up to see what I was doing. I told her that this was my new bird room, and she said, "I want my own room, too!" So then I told her that we could share it. Casse made up a sign that said "Casse's and Jules Wildlife room" and stuck it on the door. We spent about thirty minutes moving boxes of old, unused files to the corners of the room, stacking them on each other. Then I took the flowers and vase from downstairs and put them on one of the shelves, and took two of bossman's orchids from the upstairs bathroom and put them on the windowsill (they get better light there, and a breeze, which orchids need.) Man, I was so excited! This afternoon I had to go over there to pick up an injured catbird, and I brought all of these pictures I had printed up Friday night to hang on the cork board. Pictures of Ewan McGregor, Joaquin Phoenix, Johnny Depp (mostly for Casse,) a pic of Casse, Jenn W and Corrinne at the Hula show a few years ago, and some other funny or cute pics I had found or made. Then I hung a silk lei on the hook over the window. Ahh, my own room at work. ^_^
Today was Zach's (Celia's baby) first birthday party. It was at Chrissie's house across the street, and was pretty small and mellow, just a few family members and a small cake. I got Zach this alphabet caterpillar toy, where you press the feet and it says the letter. The best part is that you can switch it to phonics, so it makes the sound of the letter instead of saying the letter. Chrissie and I spent way too much time trying to make it say rude things. (It won't. Once you get to the last sound of any rude word it giggles and says "That tickles!")
( This evening in my garden. )
And now it's beginning to thunder and lightning. My poor dogs are going to refuse to go outside, and Sano is going to cower for the rest of the night.
I have to go and feed my poor sweet baby grackle who got chewed on by a cat, and is now neurological (the cat shook him up,) and has a hole in his crop with the air sacs on his chest broken. I swear, people need to keep their cats indoors. >_>
Then I'm going to watch Whose Line, then I think I'll watch a little old school Star Wars, like I did when Phantom Menace came out. I'm watching them alone this time, but I'm getting to the point of accepting that.
Happy Memorial Day, everyone!
