Kung Fu Hustle and other things
May. 5th, 2005 11:11 pmI saw Kung Fu Hustle tonight with Tricia and Kim. (Tricia hated it and walked out, didn't tell either of us she was leaving and we both missed chunks of the film looking for her. Long story.) The movie wasn't anything like I expected, not as funny, or at least not funny in a way I thought it would be. But it was still funny in ways I wasn't expecting, and there were times I was sitting there giggling my fool head off. Actually, I enjoyed it on a few levels. When I saw Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Hero, I wasn't wild about the live-action anime style. But in this movie, it seemed to make more sense to me. Maybe because it was played for laughs much of the time. But I was also fond of the story, which was sort of anime-ish, too. In fact, I recognized a lot of the ideas and styles from different animes. That was pretty cool and it appealed to me. Also, it's one of these movies that I think I'll like better as I think about it more. It was really sweet.
Tomorrow night we have a Hula show at a cultural night way out west on the Island. "Dress rehearsal" was last night, and that's in quotes because it wasn't exactly a full rehearsal, and we didn't have to get into our costumes. So, basically it was just us trying out a few of the dances on the stage. At least we got to try to figure out our entrance. The rehearsal was a disaster and I have a feeling tomorrow night is going to be a disaster, too. I messed up a lot last night, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to do even worse tomorrow.
In other news, I feel so fat today that I'm actually freaking myself out. Really, my favorite t shirt feels too small. I don't usually stress over my weight, because I'm often pretty body positive, but I guess sometimes I'm just like most other people and I get on the self-hate train. I feel like I look so awful that it's actually kind of fascinating.
Let's see, what else is going on? I know there was something. Well, there is some stuff going on with my cousin in the hospital for surgery today which didn't go as expected. It's not life threatening, just disappointing and sort of emotional. She gets to come home Sunday, and thens he's laid up for a while after that. I told her I'd go to her house (she's only across the street) and clean house for her whenever she wanted me to, and cook for her if she wants something special that maybe her husband and roommate can't do. (Not that I'm a super skilled cook, but I'm inventive and I get by.)
Lately I've gotten re-hooked on Whose Line Is It Anyway. I used to watch it years ago when it was British TV and I had a crush on Tony Slattery. ^_^ I started watchign it again about a week ago out of boredom and you know what? It's still funny.
Well, I shoudl finish up online and get to bed since I have to work tomorrow. But I'm leaving work early so I can get to the Hula show tomorrow night. Ugh, again, not looking forward to this. But this time tomorrow, at least it will be over. (God, don't I hate having to say that about Hula!) Then the group doesnt' meet for an entire month while we try to get our new rehearsal place and time settled. Snt then...dun dun dun... it's time for The Talk. We'll see how that goes.
Malama pono!
