This morning and afternoon, my hands were feeling a little owie from hitting the wooden thingie in Kung Fu yesterday, you know, like Jackie hits the wooden thingie in some of his movies, Rumble In The Bronx for instance? By mid afternoon I felt like I definitely had a bruise on the side of my hand.
( By tonight: )
There is actually a lump right there in the middle of that red mark, it really sticks up! It's gross, but kind of neat. I somehow have to find a balance between "Lovely Hula Hands" and "I Will Hand You Your Ass" hands. Not that I'm handing anyone any ass at all, but someday.
Tonight I was reading an article on Kung Fu, where it said to pace yourself: from white belt to black belt/sash is easily about seven years. (holycrapIwillbe39) But it's something to aim for. In Hula, I'll never reach a title, not unless I was going to be Kumu Hula, which I never will be, never presume to want to be, anyway. Kumu Hula hardly ever dance, anyway. ;) It's not like someday I'm going to get a black belt in Hula or something, the closest to "getting officially there" I think would be like winning Merrie Monarch (not impossible, but exceedingly unlikely and not worth the sacrifices I'd have to make,) or to win Miss Aloha Hula (impossible, as I'm not kama'aina. [Born in Hawai'i.])
For me, "getting there" in Hula is going to be having a solid, diverse repertoire that I know backwards and forwards. Oh, and of course, someday doing that big Hula show/party with my really lovely boyfriend or husband in the audience... And teaching, of course. Which is all I really want, but there's no set course to that stuff, there's no, "Okay, you got this far, now you can do such and such a show" or whatever. I've already gotten permission to teach Hula, and I think that when I'm ready, students will be there. Or when students are ready, I will be there. Either way. :)
But a black belt is something to aim for, something to, you know, do for the next seven years while other stuff happens. I think I really need something like that in my life, something sure like that. I have other goals, to be sure (most of you know what they are,) but those goals aren't things over which I have enough control to set a course, or know where they lead. With Kung Fu, I can say, "in at least seven years, I'll have a black belt" or something. That's pretty neat.
Even if I do bruise up my delicate little Hula Hands. ^_^
