Jul. 26th, 2004 10:12 pmI went to see The Bourne Supremacy today. First, let it be known that I'm a big Jason Bourne fan. I luuuurve this character. It doesn't hurt that he's played by Matty, who is one of my boyfriends. (He's just about the sweetest and cutest thing in the world, isn't he? And--my goodness--I think he's going gray! How wonderful!)
Anyway, I mostly really liked the movie; it was maybe better than the first. Of course, I went in expecting a lot of car chases and stuff, and of course, there were plenty. The car chases weren't bad, as car chases go, but they dragged on way too long. Way. Also, the cinematography was totally distracting, especially during these chase scenes. It was like the cameraman wanted in on the action. It made me dizzy and almost gave me a headache. I know it's supposed to be all artistic and stuff, but Christ in a bottle, please just hold the frigging camera still so I can see what's going on! And there was this one fight scene in which the angles were so weird, and the camera so spastic, I couldn't tell who the hell was who. At one point it looked like there was an extra leg in there. All I could think of was in the cartoons, when there's a fight and all you see is a puff of smoke, scrawly circles, exclamation points, and some hands and legs. To me, that kind of defeats the purpose of a wonderfully gritty and well-acted fight scene.
One thing about the car chases/crashes/smashes/ and all of that, though: they are very gritty. In most movie car chases and crashes and smashes, it looks like, well, like movies. This--when I could see what the hell was going on--looked and felt real. There was a sense of consequence to them. It looked devastating. Again: When I could see it.
And the acting was really great, too. Franka Potente, how can you not love her? ( click for spoilers ) And if you haven't seen "Run Lola Run", ("Lola Rennt") then go rent it, because it's really cool.
One thing I really like about this movie and The Bourne Identity, too, is the cities. They seem very alive, like they are also characters in the story. I get a distinct vibe from each city, and not only that, but a sense of distance and realism. I like to look around the scenery a lot, and it almost lets you feel as if you are there.
The story was more coherent, to me, than the first one. I liked this story a lot; I liked trying to guess who was behind framing Jason and why, the little clues the movie leaves in the beginning if you listen carefully. I liked following Jason's discoveries and memories and nightmares and seeing where they would lead, and how it would tie in with his present situation.
Let's talk about Jason Bourne for a moment. TraumaWhore has loved him from the first, so there is that. Jason Bourne is exactly what TraumaWhore likes best: he is so messed up, he should be a gibbering wreck, but he is much too tough a bastard for that. He's always one step ahead of everyone, and if he lapses, he quickly gains it back, even at great cost to himself. The movie is so fast paced, and he runs so much (physically, mentally, emotionally,) that by the end, you expect him to just run down and stop. But adrenaline keeps him running. Watching the movie made me feel tired. But everytime he outran, or outfoxed someone, I wanted to cheer for him.
My favorite scenes were: The scene in the airport in Naples where Jason is, eh, momentarily detained, (I know it's a movie, but damn, he moves fast!) and the scene with the magazine and the toaster. Magazine and toaster! How wonderful!
I am under the impression that there's going to be a third movie. I do hope so. These are going to be classics. Jason Bourne, he's the James Bond of my generation! ^_^
