Okay, I have to admit I'm going a lot from the script, too, in which Sara specifically looked a lot like Suzie (Piper's character,) suggesting that Joe had a thing for her. Suzie was the only thing that could soothe him. Yes, "thing." That's how she was treated, in the script and the film - yes, she had her own agenda, but all of her actions were plot devices to break Joe a little more.
And yeah, the whole "woman = mother" thing is irksome, too.
All of the women except for Sara were plot devices, and that bugged me out somewhat.
