I've heard that ants can survive about two weeks submerged in water. I have no idea if that's true, but it was and entomological source.
Bleach water probably has a nastier effect. (In fact, I dreamed of chasing around and splashing bleach on a giant metal spider until it ran out the door a few weeks ago)
As for why they are in the filter... that's an excellent question. Maybe there is something in there that they think is tasty, or it's a neat prefab colony. It may give hint to their method of entry.
I miss deadly winters. Sure we had some trouble back north, but it was seasonal, and nothing got a chance to get big, except the damned junebugs, but their honeymoon only lasted a few weeks.
I guess it may just be bug season. Moths are the terror here, but honestly, they aren't so bad. Just kind of annoying the way they clumsily flop around.
