i will say this, depending on the drugs, some sure can change you for the worse. i had a friend who was just awful and hostile and hateful while using cocaine. is it going to do that to everyone? probably not. is charlie sheen going to be a decent guy if he sobers up? maybe, maybe not. but there are almost assuredly multiple reasons for him to act like a complete lunatic.
