30 Seconds to Mars concert
And here we are, with the concert all over and the VMAs tonight and my favorite band nominated.
Yesterday really started when Brittany got here and we ran out to the train station. We missed the first train, but it's just as well, because we got there in plenty of time. The train ride in was uneventful yet fun. The cab ride to Webster Hall was brief and only $7.
When we got there, that was when the excitement really set in. I met up with Emma from Chicago, who was taking the donations for to give to LIFEBeat in 30STM's name. I gave her my donation, signed the card, and then we went looking for the back of the line. Ends up, the back of the line was around the next block. Figuring that we'd just get in when we got in, Brit and I walked around a bit looking for a place to eat. There was a pizza place, but I think we were both too psyched for pizza. I had an ice cream bar though, and bought some orange juice (That seems insignificant, but for me, personally, became significant later, and not in a good way.)
The doors were supposed to open at 7, but due to mass confusion with the will-call tickets, didn't end up opening until around 8:15. There were these girls on line somewhere behind us, and one of them didn't have her ID with her. We weren't told to bring them if the tickets weren't in our name, so she just didn't bring hers. The bouncer wasn't going to let her in and she was clearly over 21! The guy felt bad, you could tell, but it was just a crazy policy. Luckily she lived in the city, but she had to get a cab all the way back home and rush back with her ID. Seriously, she made it just in time. Also behind us on line were a group of really nice Echelon folks. I didn't catch everyone's name, but one girl from the forum whose screen name is "Goofy as a Goose", and she was the cutest thing with her home-made T shirt, and very polite and nice.
I was concerned about the camera policy, and spent some time trying to figure out various places to hide my camera, stuffing it into the crotch of my pants and trying unsuccessfully to walk normally, into my bra where it looked like a big, square, 3rd boob, much to the amusement of those around me. It ends up I needn't have worried. No one even checked our bags as we walked in.
Webster Hall is one of the most interesting places I've ever been to see a concert. The room we were in was very, very small and intimate, with cool statues and astrological signs all over the walls. Brittany and I quickly found a great place on the seond step, stage left--for those who know 30STM, this is known as "Tomo's side." We were really close to the stage, although the pictures and videos do not (usually) reflect that, because my camera makes it look much farther away unless you zoom. All the zoom does in some cameras--and I try to tell this to people about various cameras and no one ever seems to believe me--is bring it to the distance it actually is. So most of the time I forgot to use the zoom and so it looks like we were a lot farther from the stage than we were.
So Brit and I chilled out and sat on the floor for a while until some guy from MTV2 came out and lectured everyone about safe sex. But honestly, he really did say some nice things, and one thing he pointed out was that kids as young as 13 are getting infected with HIV, and that he personally thought that 13 was too young to be having sex. I mean, DUH, true, but it's good to hear people speak about it publically. He was like "Maybe that's old-fashioned of me." No, dude. It's just sane of you.
So then it was time to start the show. I am probably the only person in existance who is disappointed that 30STM opens their show with "O Fortuna." But maybe that's because I'm one of the few people who is old enough to know what a cliche that is. Ozzy used to open his show with that back in '87, and back then it was a huge, tremendous, awe-inspiring thing. When I heard the beginning of it I had to roll my eyes even as I was taping it. I turned to Brittany and we actually started chatting during the opening about this sequence and about Ozzy and whatnot (Of note: this was one of the quietest concerts I've ever been to, and I'm grateful for that. My ears weren't bleeding or even ringing at the end.) So there we were, trying to be all uneffected and all, and then when Shannon got behind his drums and played along with "O Fortuna", I immediately became unjaded about that song. Brittany turned to me and said, "You just got the butterflies, didn't you?" I totally did. It sounded just awesome.
Unfortunately, we hadn't considered that, where we were, we could really only see Jared and Matt. Most of the time Tomo was hidden behind the band's equipment (meaning amps and stuff, you perverts,) and seeing Shannon was ridiculously impossible from that angle. His drums were so high up, and again, lots of equipment in the way. At one point I went down into the pit (it was very tame down there, actually,) to try to get a better view of either Tomo or Shannon, but even then I couldn't.
The set list was as follows:
A Beautiful Lie
Attack
Battle of One
The Story
Buddha for Mary
The Kill
The Fantasy
I didn't remember that myself, I actually copied it from someone else who did remember it.
I was SO GLAD that they did Battle of One, and I totally started jumping around like a fool when they did, and screaming along. I *heart* that song. I was the only person in my little section leaping around and getting into it, and Jared actually turned and pointed, like, "Hey, right on!" That was pretty cool.
I think it was right after this song that some little chick up front had been crowd surfing and took a really bad fall. The rest of the band was already starting to play the opening of the song, but Jared stopped the show, and was all "awww, honey! Are you all right?" Then he gave her a hand up and kissed her on the cheek like a total big brother, saying, "This girl is a total warrior. She just ate the stage in a big way but she's all right." This sort of thing completely inspires one to, I don't know, go and bash one's face against the stage. ;D
It was also between Battle Of One and The Story that Jared acknowledged the check we had donated to LIFEBeat in their name. He said some really nice things about the few of us who donated, and then he said that the band would add to our check by $1000. Like someone on the board said, this band is a class act.
When they did The Story, there was some girl behind me trying to get a pic. I'm always self-conscious about my height and being in everyone's way, so I told her "Hey, if you want to get a pic, you can step in front," which she did, and thanked me, saying "This is my favorite song." It's not my favorite by any stretch (I usually skip it on the CD.) It was then I went down to the floor for Buddha for Mary, figuring that Jared would crowd-surf like he usually does during that song, but he didn't. Also, I couldn't see as well from down there, so I went back up. That girl never gave me my spot back! But I could still see past her.
Ahh, then they played The Kill, which was the highlight of the night, if you ask me. Not only because it's one of my favorites, but because the crowd was so into it, and the band was so into the crowd being into it, and it was great fun to sing along. Jared did a really cool crowd-walk. If anyone would like to watch the video for The Kill that I taped, you may see it here,
Let it load first. It's a big file.
The sound totally sucks. Sorry about that.
Jared also mentioned that Mom Leto was in attendance and had us all wave to her. It also made me wonder, what does Mom think of her boys on stage? Especially when Jared is all always mother efer this and mother effer that. Dude, at least leave out the "mother" part! ;D Then they did The Fantasy, and as usual, Jared went into his little crawling around on stage and singing "Closer" by NIN at this point. You know the one, "I want to eff you like an animal, I want to feel you from teh inside" thing. (Again, HI, MOM!) Most of the girls started screaming, but I was gratified to hear a girl next to Brit turn to her friend and say, "Dude, Jared is creepy." Maybe they were Taking Back Sunday fans, but it cracked me totally up. Anyway, I loved the live version of The Fantasy, because the band was all so into it, and all throwing themselves around in perfect time with each other, it was such a thing to behold. You have to see Tomo completely let loose on this one. I love it. And at the end, Jared did a beautiful stage-dive.
With a slightly (unintentionall, I'm sure) hubristic toss of his black and red hair, an "OMGs I am SO OUTTA HERE!!" hand gesture, and a friendly pat to Matt's arm, Jared was the first to leave the stage. He was followed by Matt and Tomo, then Shannon came down from his drum kit.
Watch as the sight of Shannon with his shirt off makes me drop my camera. That's me you hear giggling at my own stupidity.
Seriously, how funny was that?
Sadly, all of my pictures really suck, too. But here are a few of them anyway.

And then it was over! The rest of the night was kind of anticlimactic for me, although it was now Brittany's turn to go all kinds of crazy.
During the set-changing, I went to the bathroom and was on line behind a very drunk girl. We started talking about why some women were taking so long in the bathroom, and how weird the stalls were, so dark with the toilets lit up by red lights. She then asked me if I knew how to get to the VIP room, and if she should maybe flash someone to try to get in. I told her she was asking the wrong person. Then another drunk girl came in behind me and those two started talking. At first they thought they'd gone to school together, but from what I could hear, it ends up that they didn't know each other at all. The new girl--Drunk Girl2--said her boyfriend worked for the band and they were all partying backstage. She said she didn't do any of the work herself, she just watched the whole thing and orgasmed over Jared Leto the whole time, because dude, Jordan Catalano was so hot! (For those of you reading this who know nothing about 30STM, the lead singer is Jared Leto, who has been in lots of movies and basically got his start in Hollywood on My So Called Life in '95 or so, playing Jordan Catalano. As much as he wants to, he may never live this down.) I swear to god, I didn't think I'd actually run into any of the "Jordan Catalano Is So Hot" girls; I almost thought they were figments of people's imaginations, but they totally do exist. Drunk Girl 1 then tried to get Drunk Girl 2 to get her backstage. Coda: Hours later, on the street after the show, I saw Drunk Girl 1 tearfully apologizing to who could only have been her boyfriend, for "making you ashamed of me." I wonder if she did try to flash someone, after all.
Anyway, then TBS came on. I know that they weren't very popular with the 30STM crowd, but I enjoyed them. The lead singer is like a cracked out monkey, and he gestures and swishes very much like Captain Jack Sparrow, yet also something about him reminded me of some of the characters that Brad Pitt plays, the hyped up, talks quicker than he thinks type. I only knew one of their songs, and it's a catchy one. Plus, they are homeboys, you know? I think they're from Babylon or something. And I've heard they speak highly of The Beautiful Island of Long. We have to support the homeboys. Honestly they did an awesome show and it made me want to hear more of them.
Once they were done, Webster Hall emptied out really quickly. Outside, I asked around if there was going to be a CD signing or something like that. The boucner told me no. They also had other bouncers and a police barricade that prevented you, not only from getting back into the club, but from walking past it. Then some other guy heard me ask the question and he said, "The CD signing is only for the VIPs upstairs." Drat it all!
So Brit and I headed back to Penn Station, where some guy was puking very loudly right next to us as we walked to the entrance. I thought that was gross and kind of ignored him. I mean, really! Go puke somewhere else, not in public! Later, I was to have more sympathy for him.
On the train, we got into a car with some of the most annoying people I have ever had the displeasure of riding with. They were coming from the concert, too, I know this because the most obnoxious of the group was singing some of the 30STM songs (very, very badly,) and shouting--no, I mean bellowing--about, How could you have hardcore and POST HARDCORE on the same stage! IT MAKES NO SENSE! HARDCORE! POST HARDCORE! LISTEN TO ME PRETEND TO KNOW WHAT THE HELL I'M TALKING ABOUT! The conversation soon turned to a girl named Christy, who Obnoxious Bellowing Boy insisted was a pice of crap that he hated MORE THAN ANYONE OMGS because she RUINED HIS LIFE a few times! When another less loud but still too loud person pointed out that he actually used to hang out with said Christy, Obnoxious Bellowing Boy took great offense and bellowed even louder about HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT ABOUT ME I HATE HER OMGs!!1 They also spent a goodly amount of time wondering if they were on the right train, because they were going to Farmingdale and they hadn't heard Farmingdale on the list of announcements (because Obnoxious Bellowing Boy kept bellowing over those announcements. Truly, these people were idiots, QED.) This went on for over an hour. It's then that I started to feel sick.
Once they left, I suggested to Brittany that we go stretch out on the empty seats, which we did. I couldn't really sleep because A) I was totally nauseous, B) it was about 30 degrees on the train and c) At one point I opened my eyes to see some young guy standing by the doorway, staring at Brittany and frequently staring at me to see if I was awake. I was pretending to be asleep then, so that I could keep an eye on him. He got off at the next stop. But it was creepy.
The car ride home was atrocious. Props to Brittany for keeping me occupied and alert, but all I wanted to do was throw up. My head was pounding and all I could taste was sour ice cream and orange juice. I've never gotten car sick while I was actually driving before; it was ridiculous. That's the worst feeling. Makes me sick again just thinking of it.
I guess we got home at around 3 AM. I took a shower and checked my email. I had, earlier, entered the latest MTV contest to go to the VMA thing with 30 STM. They were looking for 20 fans to accompany them. I thought, What a wonderful idea, and sent in my entry. Once again, MTV asked for photographs. Once again I sent some, but this time with the message telling them how I felt about their beauty contests--we really should not be required to send photos to prove we love a band's music--and that if that was the case, I knew I couldn't win and really didn't want to. Part of me was thinking, Maybe MTV will respect that attitude, you know?
Needless to say, I didn't win. So I went to bed at around 3:30.
I'm still thankful that I got to see them. It was an oddly fulfilling time, and even though it was like 60 degrees or less when Brittany and I got home, it's still technically summer. Now after Sunday's BBQ--a big, family gathering for one last hurrah, as I like to think of it--I think I can give summer a kiss goodbye for a while, and start thinking about Autumn.
And 30 Seconds To Mars' Autumn Tour. ^_^
