It actually began when Howl said that life wasn't worth living if he wasn't beautiful and then Sophie said that she had never been beautiful for a moment and then ran outside crying.

That was the most heart-wrenching part of the movie, to me. That, and Calcifer coming back and giving Sophie a kiss. I love this movie to pieces, I'm glad you got a chance to see it. :)
