Query contest thingie-thing

So! I heard back from the agent who did the "no form rejections hour" just a little while ago. I guess I expected a huge big "this is wrong and that's wrong and so and so is wrong, and this is why I wasn't interested and here's how you can fix it."

But instead, a brief, polite, "While I'm looking for this genre, the story didn't grab me. Surely another agent will think differently."

I'm going to go ahead and take that as a good sign? Like maybe "not a bad query letter, just not up my alley" kinda thing? Yes, right? So, it's not such a bad thing, if that's what she meant.

And I was inordinately pleased with "Surely another agent will think differently." Surely, really? I hope she's right! I like "surely!"

In less meaningful news, last night I ate pizza, a pint of ice cream, and about a pound of raw cookie dough. I continued with this today and I feel like a blob. Sifu has promised to make me PAY tonight for my food sins. Cool. I want to work out tonight. ^_^

And, today while my Mom was at work, she saw Ms. Knifeback who I used to work with. She didn't acknowledge her. Oh man, how I'd love to run into her or Dr. Dickwhistle. Even better if they tried talking to me.

Oh, and I got another, smaller fish tank today and have it all set up. Tomorrow, after the filter's run for a while, I'm going to put Quatre and Kauru in there because they're being douchebags to Leon and Kenshin. I love the tank; it looks so peaceful, and I love the sound of the filter running in my living room. :)

Anyway, enough of that. Query letter! Not too bad, huh?

ETA: wait, unless she means that another agent will not be grabbed by the story, AND will hate the query? Like, she thinks the query isn't bad, but another agent will think differently? O_o;;

Ooohhhhh!

Hiya K, long time no see. It feels that way. I've had to wait for my broadband to be set up here in London village (as my sis calls it). Yeah I got the police job, I'm doing the initial training and it's quite indepth, a lot of homework.

I think that was a really good letter you got from that agent. You have to read between the lines and I think they meant it when they said it just wasn't up their alley but others will like it. Take heart from that. You will get there. I have faith. Wjen you do, I want a signed copy OK hee hee!

I think it's a basically positive thing--i think she meant that your query accurately conveyed the synopsis of your story, such that she was able to get the gist of the novel but that it's not a novel she felt connected to such that she's willing to beat the pavement to shop it. Who knows why--maybe she wants fluffier things, less cerebral things, something she can easily soundbyte like "This novel is Romeo and Juliet meets Brazil in a postapocalyptic gay bar" or whatev. She's encouraging you to shop it to other agents, who might connect with it. That's a good thing, despite not being "OMG i love it let me represent you plz!"

I agree, I hear that as saying that your work is worth shopping around, just not her thing. If it was weak or lacking in some way I think she would have made a different comment. It sounds very positive to me.

Thanks; I thought it was pretty heartening, too! I felt encouraged. That's really the first time someone's told me that surely another agent would want it.

I was just concerned that I might have misinterpreted that part. But, that would just be weird. I think.

I think it's a good thing, too. Hope we're right. ^_^

yeah, right? She was offering critiques; she would have said, "Oh boy, this doesn't work" if something really was wrong with it. In fact, come to think about it, she specified that she would tell us if something was really wrong.

:)

See lass, this would be overthinkin' the plumbing just a bit. :P
