I do however, take issue with putting down the sex worker's character to whore.
However, that's how she's portrayed in the film. I think sex workers are great, I also think they are necessary and I don't find anything wrong with the trade. However, she's obviously the Bad Girl who breaks the hero's heart. And that's what I take issue with. There's the "Bad Girl" and then there's the "Good Girl" - the cliche, docile, voiceless, Asian wife.
The Bad Girl (a prostitute) who breaks his heart, and the silent, supportive Asian wife who saves the hero. It's a total cliche.
Sara was the only woman in the film who came off well.
Rian Johnson doesn't always do badly with women. Penelope and Bang Bang were fantastic in The Brothers Bloom - especially Bang Bang. But it seems like when he's got Joe in the cast, he takes a wild hair and gets all these crazy female character tropes.
Like I said, it wouldn't have bothered me AS much if he hadn't made a snarky comment about it on Twitter.
